Travel to Spoleto with Piedmont Opera
May 21 @ 8:00 am - May 25 @ 5:00 pm
Once a year, Charleston, South Carolina turns to one great stage of culture shows when the Spoleto Festival is held. Travel with Piedmont Opera to be in on the action! We will travel by luxury motorcoach from Winston-Salem, NC, to Charleston. Your trip will include four nights at the Fulton Lane Inn, on King Street, in the heart of the historic shopping district. We will see the world premiere of a newly commissioned opera by North Carolina’s Rhiannon Giddens, a Grammy winning singer, songwriter, and banjoist known for exploring the legacy of African-American folk traditions. She will also be jazzing it up! (more details to come!)
The opera, currently untitled, is based on the life and autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, an enslaved Muslim-African man who was brought to Charleston in 1807. The opera’s story traces his spiritual journey from Africa to his capture and enslavement in the Carolinas. We will also take a special tour to learn more about the Gullah culture of the low country. Pricing will be released at the beginning of December.
