Live Stream? How do I live stream “Echoes from Carolina”?
We are glad you asked! While we are producing virtual content to keep our patrons safe, we want you to enjoy our performances at home. You can watch a live stream performance, whether it is Piedmont Opera, Winston-Salem Symphony, or UNCSA, on your personal device. We are going to discuss several viewing options that may be available to you. Click below on your question. If you are still confused (it’s ok, we are learning this together!), please give us a call. We are here to help you at 336.725.7101. Telephone support is available one hour prior to the performance and 30 minutes into the performance.
Purchasing your ticket. How does that work?
Call (336) 725-7101 or visit piedmontopera.org to purchase tickets. You will receive a live stream access code when you purchase your ticket and it will be delivered to you by email. Each access code is viable for one device regardless of the number of people who are viewing the same device. If your family will be enjoying the show on two devices (for example you want to watch on your computer and your spouse wants to watch it on your Smart TV), you will need two access codes (two tickets.)
The email confirming your ticket purchase will contain a blue button or stripe. Clicking on that blue button or stripe will allow you to test the connection to the live stream portal. If you test your access and the system does not automatically populate your access code, your access code will be found in the email confirming the ticket purchase.
You will know you have reached the live stream platform successfully when you see a count down timer to the performance date and the “Echoes from Carolina” image. Feel free to test this connection as often as you like between now and the performance.
Piedmont Opera does ask that you log into the live stream performance at least 30 minutes prior to the performance start time. Think of this as looking for parking, walking to the theatre and finding your seat. We will have pre-show information streaming 15 minutes prior to curtain so again you can test your connection. This will allow you time to troubleshoot if you run into problems. Piedmont Opera is offering phone support at (336) 725-7101 one hour prior to performance and 30 minutes into the show.
How many live stream access codes (tickets) do I need to purchase?
You will need one live stream access code (ticket) per device on which you will watch the performance. The access code will work on only one device, so you can have people over to your home to watch the performance with you on your tablet, phone, computer or TV. You will not be able to send them your access code for them to watch on different devices.
Live Stream Option One – Watch it on your computer
Live stream access will work on most major internet browsers on Windows and macOS. We recommend using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari when viewing live stream performances from your computer. It is best to update your browser whenever possible.
If you are having trouble viewing a live stream event, it is possible the live stream is being sent at an internet speed higher than your connection can handle. Check your download speed at http://www.speedtest.net/. We also recommend clearing your browser’s cache and ensuring your browser is updated to the most recent version.
Once you know you can live stream to your computer, you can take it a step further by connecting your computer or laptop to your smart TV with an HDMI cable. This will allow you to watch the live stream performance on your TV rather than your computer or laptop screen.
Live Stream Option Two – Watch it on your smart phone or tablet.
This will work the same way as on a computer (Live Stream Option One). We recommend using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari when viewing live stream performances from your smart phone or tablet.
Live Stream Option Three – A Chromecast device that works with your smart TV
From our research, other companies with live streaming experience do not recommend using Chromecast at this time.
If you own a Chromecast, you can “cast” the live stream event from your phone, tablet, or computer onto your smart TV. Chromecast is a device you plug into your smart TV that will then help the different devices to work together to put the live stream on your television.
Chromecast devices cost approximately $30 and can be purchased at Target, Walmart or Amazon. It is a one-time purchase with no ongoing cost or subscription. Installation in your home will take approximately 15 minutes.
Live Stream Option Four – An Apple TV that works with your smart TV
If you own an Apple TV, you can “airplay” from your phone or tablet to your smart TV.
Apple TV is a device you can purchase for approximately $150 online and does not include ongoing fees or subscriptions.
Live Stream Option Five – A web browser on your smart TV
If your smart TV has a web browser, visit PiedmontOpera.org on your TV web browser. Once there, use the links below to log onto the show.
